Let's Go this Way

Sarlat, France is known for it's Fois Gras, or as we Americans call it, goose liver pate.  But the French version is awesome.  In recognition of their fame, the town has erected these bronze geese in the heart of the old medevial section.  But they look a bit confused don't they?.

Shingles and Stone

The old town area of Sarlat, France is very typical medieval from the 100 year war era.  Note the English wattle and daub style on the turret on the left of the house.  In this part of France you'll see this combination of architectural styles since the English and French fought over this territory for so long.  Guess they figured if they combined styles they'd please both.

Image on the Floor

I love how light passing through transparent objects creates fascinating patterns.  I spotted this one while in an art gallery in Sarlat, France.  I quickly pulled out my camera to capture it when I noticed the gallery rep glaring at me.  I made sure she knew I was only going to take a picture of the light patterns on the floor, not the paintings on the wall.

Sarlat Clematis

Last year when we visited Sarlat it was a very rainy day. But this year we were blessed with sunshine. And what a difference it made. This 6th century medieval town came to life in the sun. These clematis were climbing up the side of a stone house flaunting all their glory.

Chateau Beynac

It was a full day today. Our first stop was the Medevial town of Sarlat. The sun was out and every turn around a corner was a photo op. After lunch we stopped at Beynac, a beautiful town with a huge fortified castle on the top of the limestone cliff. We walked down from the top then took a GaBarre (barge) ride on the Dordogne. It was so peaceful a quiet. Absolutely awesome!!!

Rainy Day in Sarlat

I made a run to Costco tonight to pick up a few things and get gas. When I left, the weather was dry and blustery, and when I came out 45 minutes later the ground was soaked. It felt good and we sure need the moisture. But I was reminded of a rainy day we spent in Sarlat, France last May. Wandering a Medieval town in the rain has a totally different feel than a sunny day. The colors are muted, the well worn streets take on a patina with the moisture and people scurrying under umbrellas gives it a whole different atmosphere.
