Chinese Magnolia #2

Thursday, April 14, 2011
When I was young, my mother had a Chinese Magnolia tree in the front yard, just outside my bedroom window.  She loved it as it was an early harbinger of Spring as they opened their blossoms on naked tree branches.  So every time I see one of these magnificent trees in bloom I always think of Mom.

Stop and Smell the Flowers

Sunday, April 3, 2011
This cutie was having fun today enjoying the spring flowers at Descanso Gardens.  Tulips, daffodils, primroses, foxgloves and many more were in full bloom.  Definitely worth the trip this week.  Get there before they're gone.

Coral Cactus

Tuesday, February 1, 2011
I always enjoy Spring in the desert.  When the flowers start to bloom the desert comes alive with color.  In some areas it's like an artist has splashed color over the countryside.

Spring Will Soon Be Here

Tuesday, January 25, 2011
Clivia likes to grow in cool shady places so when a ray of sun peeked through to light up these beauties I grabbed the shot.

Spring Shadows

Friday, July 2, 2010
Spring has come and gone but these daffodils remind us of the glory that the season brings.   Bright, colorful flowers awaken the joy that nature brings as everything comes to life.  We all look forward to spring as it is a new beginning and a sign of the good things to come.

Lilacs

Saturday, May 1, 2010
Nothing says Spring like the smell of lilacs.  And for some reason, every time I look at this picture I can smell them.  Talk about the power of suggestion!!

Spring Time in the Vineyard

Thursday, April 22, 2010
I grew up in Central California in the middle of a vineyard.  Dad had Thompson Seedless grapes and when I opened my drapes in the morning  I saw row after row of grapevines.  My favorite season was Spring, when the new shoots, bright green and delicate, were just emerging.  And all those tendrils.  Twisting and turning looking for something to attach to.

Paris in the Spring

When the chestnuts are in bloom it must be Spring in Paris.

Cactus Flower

Sunday, March 21, 2010
Spring in the desert brings lots of cactus flowers.  All colors, sizes and shapes.  In a good year the plants are covered with blooms.  It's amazing that something that can hurt you with all those sharp stickers can look so lovely when spring arrives.

Pretty 'n Pink

Tuesday, March 16, 2010
I love spring.  I love the flowers that the warm weather brings and the wonderful fragrances of the blossoms.  I don't like the allergies but it's a small price to pay for Mother Nature's beauty.

Ranunculus

Saturday, March 13, 2010
Spring is wonderful.  Lots of flowers and blossoms to brighten the landscape.  We'll get different flowers in the summer but none as beautiful as those we get in the spring.

I Wish It Was Spring

Saturday, January 23, 2010

The storm has passed, the sun is out and in another month the wildflowers should be blooming.  But the daffodils are showing up in the flower shops so it must be getting close to spring.

Daffodils are a wonderful sign of spring. Fresh and perky, they come in a wide variety of colors and combinations.

Beginning of Spring

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

We've had unusually warm weather, about 83 degrees today, which makes it feel like Spring. For some reason, everyone seems to think we need to have lots of non-native flowers and the Iceland Poppy is a popular choice. I must admit they are extremely colorful and vibrant when an entire bed is planted with the full range of colors. Everything from pale yellows and peaches to vibrant oranges and deep yellows makes quite a statement when seen from a distance.

Joshua Tree Blossoms

Monday, October 20, 2008

We had an exceptionally good year for wild flowers this spring and when that happens I head up to Joshua Tree National Park. Known primarily for it's unique rock formations that climbers love to traverse, it's a virtual paradise of blossoms when we have sufficient rain. These blossoms on the Joshua Tree exemplify the beauty in this otherwise desolate area of Southern California.
