Angel comes from the Greek and Hebrew words meaning "messenger." The angels that were a part of the Christmas Story were delivering a message. The angel Gabriel brought news to Mary that she was chosen to bear God's son.
Joseph was told by angels about the child who was to come and not be afraid of having Mary as his wife.
